Lecturers from the Creative Arts Department within the College’s Centre for Creative Industries took part in the National Society for Education in Art & Design (NSEAD) Conference which was held for school teachers to develop their knowledge and skills in Art and Design.

The four staff delivered two very practical hands-on workshops covering the subjects of Jewellery and 3D modelling. The workshops on offer from Adam Smith were oversubscribed three times over, highlighting the great reputation of Adam Smith staff as leaders in Creative education.

Claire Thomson and Douglas Kelso’s workshop gave the teachers the chance to interpret an orthographic drawing and build a three dimensional model using the iconic Gerrit Rietvelt RED/ BLUE chair. The teachers constructed the chair by cutting wood to make up the components.

Susan Urquhart and Karen Masters’ jewellery workshop gave teachers an insight into classroom techniques for using copper and fabric, discovering what can be achieved with limited resources.

Elinor Vettraino, Creative Arts Department Manager at Adam Smith College, said, “The people who took part in our workshops were buzzing with excitement - during and after - and it was great to showcase the lecturers talents in the areas of 3D modelling and Jewellery, putting us firmly on the map for Art and Design Education.

“Next year Adam Smith College will host the NSEAD Directory on Saturday 27th November 2010, which historically has brought together suppliers and presenters in the field of Art and Design to share their materials, ideas and equipment. Next year we are changing the format to include hands-on workshops in practical Art and Design areas such as 3D construction, jewellery making, glass fusion, and CAD design, and we are looking forward to welcoming primary and secondary teachers from all over the country to share practice and enhance their skills.”
