Adam Smith College is lending its health and fitness expertise to NHS Fife’s ‘Winning by Losing’ weight management programme, which has just launched in Kirkcaldy. Fitness Instructors from Adam Smith College’s fully-equipped gym have received specialised training from NHS Fife to help deliver the 12-week programme, which is comprised of a weekly weight management class followed by an optional hour of bespoke exercise.

Sharon McGuire, Curriculum Head for Sport & Fitness at Adam Smith College stated: “Winning by Losing is unique in that, far from being a simple weight loss programme, participants will find out how to make sustained lifestyle changes and set their own goals for what they want to achieve.

“In the first hour we cover topics such as understanding food labelling, how to make nutritious family meals and how to take small steps towards a healthier lifestyle. The second optional hour will be adapted to suit those taking part. Our instructors are aware that many clients may not have exercised for some time, therefore the exercise session will be fully supported and clients will progress at a pace suitable to them”

Deborah Vanstone, the Dietician at NHS Fife who oversees the project, said: “The Winning by Losing programme has been running for a number of years, but this is the first time we’ve worked with Adam Smith College to deliver the physical activity side of weight management.

“The programme is aimed at overweight or obese adults. We are not aiming for participants to lose massive amounts of weight in a short time as this cannot be sustained and encourages unhealthy weight cycling. The programme supports people to make small changes to their lifestyle during and after the 12 weeks, ensuring that a healthy weight loss is achieved, and more importantly, is sustained.”

“By combining expert nutritional advice with the specialist exercise and training that the Adam Smith College fitness instructors offer; we have ensured that Winning by Losing will continue to be a hugely successful way forward to a healthier lifestyle.”

The 12-week ‘Winning by Losing’ programme began on Wednesday 11 November at Adam Smith College’s St Brycedale campus in Kirkcaldy. Anyone from Fife interested in taking part should contact Deborah Vanstone, Adult Healthy Weight Dietitian on 01383 623623 ext 5850 for further information or simply come along on Wenesday 25th November at 7pm..
