01 February 2010

Two Adam Smith College students, who are currently studying social sciences, were recently selected to take part in the Lessons from Auschwitz project. The project, which is run by the Holocaust Education Trust, has been set up to take students on a journey of learning and exploration while educating them on the history of the Holocaust.

Social Sciences students who recently took part in the Lessons from Auschwitz Project.Kirsty Ironside and Derek Ridley who are currently studying social sciences, were recently selected to take part in the Lessons from Auschwitz project.

The students, Kirsty Ironside (32) and Derek Ridley (21) took part in the intense course which consisted of a pre and post visit seminar and a one day trip to Poland. The one day visit saw the student’s tour authentic sites and museums including the Auschwitz /Birkenau concentration camps.

Kirsty said, “I had always known about the holocaust but nothing could have prepared me for the concentration camps, it still hasn’t really sunk in what I actually saw. I have learnt valuable lessons from the trip and I feel stronger than ever that as a society we should embrace diversity.”

Eric Cochrane, Curriculum Head in Social Sciences, said “Places on the programme are limited so we were delighted that two spaces became available for our students. The experiences and lessons that they learned were invaluable to them and through them we are hoping to teach other students with online learning materials.”

The CREATE Project run by Adam Smith College will allow the students to record their thoughts and feelings from their journey and will be used as part of the curriculum to teach future students about the holocaust and the destructive effect that racism and prejudice, if accepted, could have on our society.
