Healthfest Award Success

Staff from Adam Smith College are celebrating this week after picking up an award for Student Learning at the recent Scotland’s Colleges Annual Awards Ceremony held in Glasgow.

The College was awarded commended for their Healthfest event held in April this year which was organised by staff and students from the Centre for Education and Care Studies.
Students, with staff support, organised, put into action and evaluated the day-long health and cultural, diversity festival which took place in the College’s St Brycedale Campus.
The day was a great success and hundreds of students, staff, school pupils attended throughout the day. Over 40 exhibitors with stands, information and practical demonstrations attended. There was also a range of workshops and activities including salsa dancing, jazzercise, personal safety, healthy eating and competitions.
Exhibitors at the event included Diabetes UK, Samaritans, Asthma Specialist, Mental Health Awareness, Citizens Advice and Fife Alcohol Support Service.
The Fire Service and Police were also at the event with displays and the Army’s huge inflatable assault course was extremely popular.
Geraldine Murphy, Department Manager said: “The idea of Healthfest emerged from the desire to give students a stimulating and challenging project which would encourage the development of skills and qualities relevant to their future studies and career. Staff devised the project for three student groups who were studying Pre-Access to Nursing, Midwifery and Health Care courses. I am very proud of what they have all achieved and winning the Scotland’s Colleges Award is the icing on the cake.”
The next Healthfest is due to be even better than the last and is planned to take place on 31st March 2010.
