The exciting project to refurbish the antique chair was taken on by first year Shipwright apprentices from Babcock in Rosyth. The group of students are currently studying at Adam Smith College as part of their apprenticeship, covering areas such as fabrication and welding and carpentry skills. The two month project within the furniture department was used as part of an orthographic practical exercise, allowing the group to learn about scale and proportion and also technical drawing.

Babcock apprentice, Austin Allan (33) from Kirkcaldy said, “I have been a student at Adam Smith College for two and a half years and was delighted to get an apprenticeship with Babcock. The College course teaches us a mixture of practical skills using a variety of materials that is invaluable to us in our apprenticeships.”

The chair, which has been in the Dunfermline Rotary Club for well over 50 years, was stripped and re-upholstered as part of the project. The Chairman of the Rotary Club, Noel McKenna said, “The apprentices have done an amazing job. When we handed over the chair is was old, battered and very uncomfortable but they have worked wonders and have managed to restore it back to its former style with original features and antique studs. I look forward to sitting on it now!”

Claire Thomson, Curriculum Head for Furniture and Introduction to the Creative Arts at Adam Smith College said, “This has been a fantastic project for the group. They all worked really hard on restoring the chair and gained great experience and new skills. We all enjoyed the challenge, and it’s been fantastic to be able to use our knowledge to give something back to the community.”
